It all began in 1980, when Ernst Jenedal brought together a number of music teachers and amateur musicians in Västerås to make music in a mandolin orchestra. In order to improve the reputation of the mandolin, Ernst wanted to show that the instrument very well could be used as a concert instrument. In 1984 the name Westra Aros Mandoliner was used for the first time as the name of the group.

The orchestra has during the years given several concerts in Västerås with environs, taken part in international mandolin festivals in Sweden and Germany, had an exchange with German mandolin orchestras and also arranged its own festival in Västerås in 1990.
The members of the orchestra, today in round numbers 50 people, are spread out on 5 groups that make music at different levels. The orchestra consists of the musical instruments mandolin, mandola, guitar, double bass and keyboard.

The repertoire comprises early baroque music, folk music and modern classic music. The orchestra is organized as a non-profit-making association with the task of spreading interest in mandolin music.
